Topic: PowerShell for the SharePoint Admin and Developer​

PowerShell is a tool that every SharePoint Admin and Developer must have in their toolkit.  In this session, we will look at an introduction to PowerShell, some useful cmdlets to get acquainted with the shell, and some practical application of PowerShell in a farm.  As time permits, we’ll show how you can use PowerShell to replace (some) timer jobs with a process that runs outside of the SharePoint process.

Presenter: Paul Baker

Paul Baker has been working with SharePoint since WSS 3.0. He has experience as a SharePoint Administrator, SharePoint Developer, and some work in the BI realm. Paul has worked as an instructor and SharePoint consultant, where he enjoyed helping organizations get the most out of SharePoint. He currently works at Boys Town, where he helps to maintain the existing SharePoint infrastructure and architect systems and solutions to meet business needs in the future.

Topic:  A Walk Around the Block

This session will walk through what all Gavilon has been up to in the past couple of years. We’ll touch on the status of our migration from 2007 to 2013 and lessons learned as well as check out some new functionality we have using Nintex workflows and out of the box features to provide business process automation and information to employees. We’ll take a peek at a couple of our community sites as well.

Presenter: Amber Roberts

Amber Roberts has been with Gavilon nearly 10 years and recently moved from the Legal group to IT. As the SharePoint and Information Governance resource, she’s passionate about document control and using SharePoint as a basis to increase efficiency throughout the company. She’s currently in the middle of migrating Gavilon’s 2007 environment to 2013 as well as handling new design and builds utilizing out of the box SharePoint components and Nintex workflows and forms for the Intranet and Team sites. Amber leads the monthly Gavilon SharePoint User Group which has topics specific to Gavilon’s environment and its current priorities. She believes in training employees to become power users and loves when she “sees the lightbulb go on” and users start to understand how powerful SharePoint can be when used properly. When not researching new SharePoint functionality Amber can be found reading, scrapbooking, watching movies or playing with her three kids (15, 5 and 10 months).

New Ontolica Fusion Feature!

Datopolis Express

Many of you may remember that Datopolis was a sponsor of one of our meetings a couple of years ago.  They have a workflow engine for SharePoint.  I was just informed that they now have a FREE version that is full-featured specifically geared to small volume workflows.  The free version is limited to 1000 workflow actions per month.  Here is their description:

d3.js Training

A couple of months ago, we all saw how powerful d3.js is an how we can create some awesome dashboards in SharePoint.

I just found a video training course on d3 on Egghead.io.  It appears to be free so check it out.  From what I’ve watched so far, it gets into using the library on Node.JS but you can adapt it to using in SharePoint.

TOPIC: Managing ERM Objectives With SharePoint

Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is a strategic business discipline that supports the achievement of an organization’s objectives by addressing risks from a holistic approach and perspective. An effective ERM strategy requires thorough, visible and consistent process definition, role management, content management and business analytics from the business unit entities to the executive leadership team. We will review the various components of an ERM platform, the basics and objectives of risk management and the solution options available with SharePoint.

Kerry is an alumnus of the University of Nebraska-Omaha (UNO) where he earned Bachelor of Science degrees in both MIS and Statistics (1994). His IT career includes experience at Mutual of Omaha, Acceptance Ins Co, First Data Corp, Data Transmission Network, HDR, and Sogeti. He is now Manager of Technical Support at Mutual of Omaha in the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Division.

His passion is to mentor, teach and empower people to improve upon whatever they’re doing through project management, business process management, content and document management, information architecture, user adoption, business analytics and risk management.

He has broad SharePoint experience across the versions of 2003, 2007, 2010, 2013 and O365/SharePoint, tools of SharePoint Designer/Workflow, InfoPath Forms, Nintex Forms/Workflow and Azure.

Our October User Group meeting was held on October 6, 2016.

Topic: SharePoint Branding Rebooted – OnPrem or Online

Alter the look, feel, and even functionality of every page in every SharePoint Site in your entire Site Collection!

  • No Solutions
  • No Features
  • No SharePoint Add-Ins (Apps for SharePoint)
  • No Add-In Webs (App Webs)
  • No Composed Looks
  • No Custom Master Pages
  • No Design Manager
  • No Publishing Page Layouts (unless you need them)

Apply your “brand” (jQuery, custom JavaScript, custom CSS) with the click of a button, remove it just as easily. Update your assets using whatever editor suits your fancy: Notepad, Notepad++, Visual Studio, SharePoint Designer, Sublime Text, Hot Dog Pro (is that really still a thing), etc.

Every page? Yep… including application pages (_layouts), Web Part pages, wiki pages, dialog pages, publishing pages (if you insist); including every page in all future child Sites as well.

Change virtually anything you want:

  • Change the color, size, background of virtually any element
  • Hide elements that you don’t want the user to see, provide a UX to resurface it if you wish
  • Alter the color for each calendar in SharePoint Calendar Overlays
  • Remove “Pages” from the SharePoint breadcrumb
  • Add animations and transitions, anything jQuery can do really
